You can organize a ESL Class in your Unit
- Welcome to the Inner-city Mission ESL program. It is a program designed to help you become an ESL instructor, so that you will be able to teach those students in your units who want to learn or improve their English. You will first need to discuss with your bishop or branch president the possibility of providing an ESL class in your ward or branch. Once you have the support from your leadership of your unit, decide the days that you will teach the class. It is suggested that you teach the class a minimum of twice a week, one-and-a-half hours per class. You may even want to combine with another missionary couple or single missionary to “team teach” your students. Some units have called their own members to teach the ESL class, while using the Inner-city missionary couple or single as a support to the class. The curriculum is provided, as well as Teacher Training and lots of one-on-one support from the ESL Specialists, Elder Matt and Sister Robin Duffy. So to review, remember the following steps to get started:
1st – get permission from your bishop or branch president.
2nd – receive Teacher Training from the Duffy’s (your curriculum and handouts will be provided)
3rd – decide the days of the week to teach the class
4th – advertise, advertise, advertise
5th – have fun!!!
- Teaching our brothers and sisters English will change your life and theirs.”Improve your LIFE, learn English” as seen recently in a copy shop in Rome, Italy by BYUI Pathway missionaries and former Inner-city missionaries. Keep in mind the importance that learning English is a key component towards the path to Self-Reliance.
